The Super Eight match between Pakistan national cricket team and Sri Lanka national cricket team has concluded. Though Pakistan has won the match, it is New Zealand who will be the happiest right now. Though Pakistan emerged victorious by a hard-fought five-run margin, they are now officially eliminated from the tournament. On the other hand, the New Zealand national cricket team secured the final spot in the semi-finals from Group 2.

The high-octane clash took place at the picturesque Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, which lived up to its billing.

Pakistan's explosive opening stand

Pakistan, asked to bat first, produced their finest batting performance of the tournament. Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman, the opening duo, gave a lesson in destructive batting as they put up a sensational 176-run stand, which is the highest opening stand of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Farhan was in top form as he smashed a fabulous century off only 60 deliveries. With this impressive knock, he became the first player in one edition of the tournament to achieve two centuries. His knock has also helped him surpass Virat Kohli's record for scoring the most runs in a single T20 World Cup edition.

On the other hand, Fakhar Zaman scored 84 off just 42 balls.

Late Sri Lanka fightback keeps Pakistan under pressure

Just when it seemed that Pakistan would comfortably surpass 220, Sri Lanka made a smart comeback towards the end of the innings. They restricted Pakistan to 212/8.

Captain Dasun Shanaka also contributed to his side’s cause with his bowling as he took vital wickets in the last overs to prevent Pakistan from amassing a huge score. Nonetheless, Pakistan’s score seemed to be more than enough on a good batting track.

Shanaka’s Heroic Chase Creates Drama for Pakistan’s Elimination

Sri Lanka got off to a flying start in their chase, but frequent wickets ensured that Pakistan were always in the driving seat throughout their innings. However, it was a different story altogether as Shanaka’s incredible chase brought Pakistan’s elimination drama to life.

Dasun Shanaka’s unbeaten 76 off just 31 balls ensured that Sri Lanka were just a whisker away from a dramatic win as they finished their innings on 207/6, still five runs short of a win. Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi bowled incredibly well under immense pressure as he conceded big hits but also bowled vital dot balls in the last overs.

Why Pakistan still exit and New Zealand advance

Despite winning the game, Pakistan’s tournament was effectively ended when the game was halted midway through the game when Sri Lanka scored the required 148 runs in the chase.

Both Pakistan and New Zealand had ended on the same points in the Super Eight Group 2 league table. However, the better net run rate helped New Zealand qualify for the semi-finals. The second spot in the semi-finals had already been confirmed by the England national cricket team.

Great analysis! I think the toss will be crucial. If India bats first and puts up 300+, it's game over for NZ.

Don't underestimate the Black Caps! We've won in India before. Williamson's leadership will make the difference.
