The Indian National Cricket Team did it again in the T20 World Cup final by snatching the victory from the New Zealand National Cricket Team. Team India won the match by completely dominating the New Zealand side and secured their iconic victory by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With this win, India managed to grab their third T20 World Cup title.   

The match included a generation knock by Sanju Samson of 89 runs and an aggressive start from young opener Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan. All these individual performances helped India to put a massive score of 255 runs for 5 wickets. This score is also the highest ever total recorded in the T20 World Cup final. 

While New Zealand struggled the whole game, both with a batting and the ball, and eventually fell behind by just 159 run so, while chasing.

Match Overview

The final match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 started when New Zealand captain Mithil Central won the toss and decided to bat first against India. The Indian team will have to chase the target under the lights.

The start from Team India was very careful and structured, scoring only 12 runs in the first two overs of the game. However, the tempo changed quickly after that.

From the third over, the Indian openers showcased their aggressive style and put up a powerful counterattack against the New Zealand bowlers under pressure.

Explosive Powerfully From India

The Indian openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samsung delivered one of the most destructive betting performance in the T20 World Cup history.

The Attack started with New Zealand's best bowlers, like Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, and Jacob Duffy. Both of these openers put up a huge score of 92 runs in the first 6 overs with zero wickets. The score equals the highest powerplay total in the T20 World Cup history, matching the record of the West Indies in the 2024 edition of the tournament

Individually, Abhishek Sharma was leading the batting attack. This young opener smashed his half-century in just 18 balls, which makes it the fastest 50 of the 2026 edition of the T20 World Cup. This destructive innings of Abhishek Sharma included three sixes and six fours before he was dismissed by Rachin Ravinder in the 18th over.

Samson and Kishan Build a Massive Total 

Even after Abhishek Sharma was dismissed, the momentum for Team India was never lost. Sanju Samson took charge and continued the attacking strategy while forming a partnership with Ishan Kishan. Sanju Samsung reached his half-century in just 33 balls, making his third consecutive 50 in this tournament.

 Ishan Kishan also maintained the strike rate and completed his half-century in just 23 balls as India crossed the 15th over. With continuous striking, India even locked to set an even bigger total than 255. New Zealand tried to fight back against India, with James Neesham producing a brilliant over. The individual dismissed Sanju Samson for 89 runs, and later he also took the wickets of Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav. The sudden fall of wickets resulted in India going from 203/1 to 204/4. 

Shivam Dube Finishing Off in Style 

Despite tight bowling from New Zealand's pace attack, India managed to gain Momentum again, all thanks to Shivam Dube.

Shivam Dube offered up a powerful finish to team India by scoring 24 runs within the final over, bowled by Neesham. Because of his efforts, India managed to put up a massive total of 255 runs in 20 overs. 

India's Early Control in the Run Chase

In the early moments of the game, New Zealand got a small amount of luck when Shivam Dube dropped a catch to give Finn Allen an early lifeline. 

However, Axar Patel rectified Dube’s mistake and dismissed Finn Allen when he was attempting a big shot. Indian bowlers never struggled in the run chase, and they took control of the entire match by taking constant wickets.

India's star player Jaspreet Bumrah removed Rachin Ravindra, while Axar Patel dismissed Glenn Philips to leave New Zealand struggling at 53 for 3 at the end of the power play 

The Win for India 

Tim Seifert tried to make things work for New Zealand; however, New Zealand fell apart at just 159, giving a smooth victory to team India. Jaspreet Bumrah delivered the final blow with an exceptional spell of 4 wickets in just 15 runs, while Axar Patel took 3 wickets for 27 runs.
