Last night in the round 16 clash of the UEFA Europa Conference League, Crystal Palace FC were held to a 0-0 draw by AEK Larnaca FC in the first leg of their round 16. The match was scheduled to be played at the Sekhurst Park on March 12.  The team showcased domination in the match and put up a difficult contest for each other. The confidence in their defence from both teams resulted in a goalless match that is, however, full of entertainment.

Despite getting more ball hold and creating multiple chances against the opposition, the English side was unable to score even a single goal against the discipline of the opposition. Solid defense against the attacks of Crystal Palace FC ultimately prevented any player from scoring a single goal in the entire match. The tie between these two means both teams will have to head to the second leg in Cyprus.

Palace control in the first half

In the initial phase of the match, Crystal Palace FC controlled more ball possession and pushed forward by using their normal attacking strategy. The English players look more confident, and the home advantage was definitely boosting their confidence, which resulted in multiple early chances from their experienced forwards.

However, the opponent was determined and stayed organised throughout the match defence. Their strong defence results in limiting clear opportunities inside the penalty area and making it difficult for Crystal Palace FC to score even a single goal. The defender remained compact and blocked multiple attacking movements from the palace.

Although the home side was still more confident and enjoyed more ball possession. After the whistle at half-time, the score for both teams is 0-0. Larnaca's strategy frustrated the English club by holding on to the defence with composure and strategy.

Multiple missed chances in the second half for the Palace

The English club tried to uplift their attacking strategy and increase pressure on Larnaca by making quick ball movements and creating several good chances to score.

Key players from Crystal Palace FC, such as Evans Gusessand, Tyrick Mitchell, and Chris Richards, had multiple opportunities to score the initial breakthrough of the game; however, they were unable to convert them successfully.

Goalkeeper Zlatan Alomerovic also played a significant role in the game for AEK Larnaca, by making multiple important saves to make the match equal for all. The defence from the opposition team was determined, solid, and difficult for the English players to break through.

In the letter stages of the game, Crystal Palace FC continued their attack; however, AEK Larnaca defended strongly and ensured they left London with an upsetting draw.

Strategical battle

The manager of Crystal Palace FC, Oliver Glasner, played a crucial role in the team's attacking strategy from the outset. The midfielders pushing forward and the full-backs joining the attack create strong pressure on the opponents. The attack strategy from the holes was remarkable; however, the defence was unbreakable.

On the other hand, AEK Larnaca focuses on a defensive strategy throughout the match without trying anything extraordinary. The Cypriot Club kept their defence lines compact and relied on quick counterattacks when they had a ball. The attack from AEK Larnaca was somewhat very slow, and the players were playing on the back foot.

The defensive approach worked wonderfully well, as they limited the attacking pressure of Crystal Palace FC and reduced their chances significantly under heavy pressure.

Reaction after the match

For the home team, the results of the match were very disappointing in terms of fans and analysts. Despite dominance over the entire match, many fans expected  Crystal Palace FC to get a win. The defence from the opposition allowed the host to leave the field without a single goal scoring meaning that they have to perform well in the next leg away from home.

What happens in the second leg?

Both teams will now reach AEK Arena in Cyprus. With the scorecard still 0-0, both teams will have an equal chance to progress into the quarter finals.

Crystal Palace FC will increase their goal finishing, while AEK Larnaca will again try to put up a strong defence, but now with a reliable attacking strategy.

Conclusion

The first leg between Crystal Palace FC and AEK Larnaca ended in a frustrating night for all the fans who are rooting for the English side to win dominantly. Despite holding the ball for more time and creating multiple chances, Crystal Palace FC was unable to find the initial breakthrough and ended their match with zero goals.

AEK Larnaca, strong defence against the host, and secure a valuable away draw. However, they still have to work on their attack to make sure the second leg between both teams is entertaining and competitive.

The competition in the UEFA Europa Conference League will significantly increase when both teams fight desperately to secure a ticket for quarter finals.
